Time Square Dead or Alive?
I think that Time Square is more alive then ever before. If you look at a city like Winnipeg, our downtown looks nothing like that of other larger cities and spaces like Time Square. Winnipeg has been trying to "revitalize the downtown" for a while now and some of the plans for this revitalization are being influenced from Time Square. Raymond Wan, a Winnipeg Architect came to speak to us last year and showed us some plans for the redevelopment of the Global Television building on Main and Portage. As soon as I saw them, it reminded me of Time Square. The flashy lights, large advertisements and pedestrian oriented plan all reflected the same ideas represented in this Manhattan hot spot. If you look at the Richardson Building downtown, they have recently added lights surrounding the base of the building that change colour every few seconds, trying to add colour and life to a somewhat, dull (sorry to offend anyone) downtown area. Laura's blog mentions other buildings in Asian countries, and this is a perfect example of what I am explaining. A lot of places around the world are turning to this advertisement based, spectacle style architecture to define the cities. Time Square is more influential and alive then ever, in my opinion.
